Freakwater was formed by Janet Bean and Catherine Irwin in 1989 and has been innovating and reinvigorating alt-country ever since. Following two records on Amoeba Records, the duo signed to Thrill Jockey in 1993 for the seminal Feels Like the Third Time, which was reissued on vinyl for Record Store Day 2012. The record opens with "My Old Drunk Friend," perhaps the greatest song Hank Williams never wrote and features seven originals and five covers of songs by the likes of Conway Twitty, Woody Guthrie and Nick Lowe. 1995's Old Paint showed the group's songwriting coming into its own, and was their most critically acclaimed album to date. 1998's Springtime saw the addition of Wilco's Max Konrad Johnston to the group, and features some of the band's most heartbreaking and beautiful songs, including the now classic "Louisville Lip." The group expanded their sound on End Time, adding drum kit, organ, and even strings on several songs.
The early aughts saw Bean and Irwin each releasing solo albums, Dragging Wonder Lake and Cut Yourself a Switch respectively. Both records showed each musician exploring different facets of the sound cultivated in Freakwater: Irwin a stripped down, appalacian vision of folk music, and Bean an artfully crafted, cosmopolitan type of pop. In 2005 the group released Thinking of You, a collaboration with members of fellow Thrill Jockey group Califone. After a long silence, Irwin finally released her second solo release, Little Heater in September of 2012, which Oxford American said, "will leave you aching for a broken heart so you too can sing wrenching songs about love and loss."

Fans of the aggressive cacophony of Louisville's Young Widows may be surprised when frontman Evan Patterson's restrained acoustic guitar greets them at the top of ...It's Jayle Time!, the debut full-length from Patterson's singer-songwriter alter ego Jaye Jayle. The record follows the eponymous protagonist through a fever dream of sex, booze, loneliness, and demons out on the barren range of New Mexico. In the studio, Patterson is joined by a loose assemblage of Louisville musicians that includes Jonathan Glen Wood (of Old Baby), Lowe Sutherland, Jim Marlowe (Tropical Trash/Astro Black Records) and more.

Eschewing a traditional LP release, ...It's Jayle Time! will be released as a series of limited 7" singles throughout 2014. First up is "Pull Me Back To Hell" b/w "Evil Windows", out in January via Sophomore Lounge. Subsequent singles are expected to arrive thereafter through Hawthorne Street Records and Jade Tree.
Morgan Geer's Drunken Prayer
Morgan Christopher Geer, who performs solo and with band as Drunken Prayer, splits residence between Asheville, NC and Portland, OR. KCRW, LA calls Drunken Prayer, “a quintessential slice of backwoods poetry”. The Portland Mercury describes Geer as “the bastard child of Tom Waits and Merle Haggard”.
Morgan is also the current studio and touring guitar player for Bloodshot Records artists, Freakwater.

He is the son of a New Orleans folk singer and a California mushroom farmer. His wit comes easy, in whispers, shouts and sneers. He’s a showman–“a barking ringleader with chops between Tom Waits and the Butthole Surfers’ Gibby Haynes” (Willamette Week, Portland, OR).

Geer, who grew up in Black Mountain, NC, wrote many of Drunken Prayer’s first compositions while wood-shedding on a farm in Sonoma County, California. His records are a dark mix of blues, country, traditionals and reluctant pop music; dynamic, with “an almost inculpable sincerity” (Mountain Xpress, Asheville, NC). His swampy crooning vocals and angular, percussive guitar style create a nicely creepy backdrop for rakish, playful stories of unironic and eternal themes.

In February, 2012 Drunken Prayer became Portland based Fluff and Gravy Records’ inaugural artist with the release of Into the Missionfield. Since then Geer’s records have been an ambitious and critical success; the Portland Mercury going so far as to declare Geer “Warren Zevon’s medium, showing him the world from the great beyond.” On Drunken Prayer’s latest effort, The Devil & The Blues (August, 2015), Geer crafts another journey through America’s weird musical heritage. With help from members of The Sadies, Reigning Sound, and Freakwater, the sounds on this record are bluesy and psychedelic; the arrangements as loose and buoyant as a New Orleans Jazz funeral. The lyrics are as sweet as they are damning, offering a window into the mind of Morgan Geer. The view that it affords is at once unsettling and familiar.

Geer’s previous band, The Unholy Trio of Asheville, NC, also featured members of The Reigning Sound and Freakwater. On their 5th Year Anniversary compilation Bloodshot Records featured the Trio’s devilish version of Public Enemy’s “Bring the Noise”.
